Chapter Eight
They had to park nearly a quarter of a mile from Cyrusâ apartment, but Emrys didnât mind. It gave him a chance to see a small part of the Quarter, and he found himself awed by some of the sights. He spotted the tourists right away, of course, but there were also musicians, magicians, fortune tellers, and something Cyrus called âliving statues.â
They passed a voodoo shop with a set of tarot cards in the window. A petite woman with the most gorgeous cinnamon complexion heâd ever seen offered him a cup of soup from the bed of her pickup. Apparently, it was a proven hangover remedy. He didnât have a hangoverâhe rarely even drankâbut he kind of wanted to try it, and he was more than a little disappointed when Cyrus nudged him to keep him walking.
Neon lights illuminated the streets, and jazz music could be heard from every corner. People packed together in front of bars, restaurants, and shops. The scent of grilled meat and Cajun spices lingered in the air, only slightly more potent than the smell of hot garbage and vomit.
He loved it.
âI canât believe you actually live here,â he commented, using their telepathic link so he didnât have to shout over the blare of trumpets. âThis is so amazing.â
âYou know,â Cyrus answered back as he leaned closer to press a kiss to Emrysâ temple, âyou could live here, too. This could be your home.â
As much as he loved the idea, and ultimately, heâd follow his mate anywhere, a pang of sadness overwhelmed him at the thought of leaving Blackhaven Manor. The people he worked with werenât just friends. They had become his family.
He glanced up at Cyrus as they passed under a neon sign depicting an inebriated oyster. His mate was his family, too, though, and he just couldnât see him being happy in a quiet, unassuming town like Echo Falls.
âCan I think about it?â
If Cyrus was disappointed or upset, he didnât show it. He smiled, linked his hand with Emrysâ, and squeezed it gently. âOf course. We donât have to decide anything right now. I think we have enough to be getting on with, donât you?â
That was an understatement. He supposed he really shouldnât worry about where he was going to live in a week or two when he might not even be alive by then.
âHere we are,â Cyrus said, stopping at a door just past the open-air bar. He pulled a key from his pocket and unlocked it, pushing Emrys across the threshold in front of him. âUp we go,â he added out loud, pointing to the rickety staircase to the right. âDonât worry. Theyâre sturdier than they look.â
Emrys chuckled as he led the way, climbing the steps to the upper landing. With only one door in the small space, he didnât have to ask where to go next. Standing to the side, he waited for his mate to unlock it as well, then followed him into the apartment.
âOh, wow.â
It was bigger than heâd expected, with plenty of windows to let in sunlight during the day.
